" I am very proud to have been responsible for the civil design at this historic and important focal point" says Director Stephen Gibson. " The exterior of Exeter Cathedral was originally a mixture of cracked asphalt and broken paving. I worked closely with one of the leading Landscaping Consultancies in the UK – Robert Myers Associates to agree an arrangement which met the client expectations.
"The challenge was a design which provided longer term strength, future services flexibility while minimising excavation depth. The technique and design was based on a philosophy more commonly applied in Italy, using fine locally sourced hard stone rather than sand or mortar. The surface water drainage again had a traditional feel which suited the historic setting. I was keen from the start to avoid the use of an expensive reinforced concrete subbase arrangement traditionally applied as it would have required unattractive joints and reduce the future adaptability of the site."
